CASE Curriculum: Say My Name

Did you learn anything about the students during the name activity (Say my name)? If yes, what? Should this activity be included in the curriculum? Please explain.

  1. I am with fourth grade boys and most of them did pretty well with this. I feel that this is important particularly for this group of kids. Most of them really do not know how to introduce themselves properly and I think it is important that they know.

  2. I definately feel that this should be included. I am with 3rd grade girls and I noticed that they were not confident in introducing themselves. They needed quite a bit of practice to be able to get used to introducing themselves. I think this is a very important life skill that should be taught.

  3. I enjoyed watching my boys learn to introduce themselves. Now when new people come into my classroom, most of them introduce themselves. It should definitely be included next year.

  4. This activity was really great it was the first activity we did together in case and it was really neat to see my boys gain confidence with each new hand they met. It was also a good ice breaker it gave myself and my boys a chance to meet one another in a new and fun way!

  5. Yes, I did learn something from the students while participating in this activity. I learn that some students enjoyed introducing themselves to new people while some would rather work along. This activity showed me which students need that extra push to get out there and meet new people.

  6. I learned that some students were shy and soft spoken while other students were not. I think this should be included in the curriculum next year since it gave us an opportunity to learn why it is important to be able to present ourselves to others in a confident way

  7. I loved this activity because it made the students vulnerable. The "tougher/meaner" girls had to do the same thing as every other girl in the classroom. I loved it because they had to stand in front of one another, and lay it out there. This activity confirmed some of my thoughts about particular students. It helped me to see the difference between being shy, and being insecure. It was a great addition to the CASE curriculum!

  9. I think this activity should be included in the CASE curriculum. I had a chance to show my group of girls how to be confident when introducing yourself and to take pride in who you are. Some of my girls had fun participating in this and some of them were really shy about doing this. This activity has allowed a lot of the girls to open up during this program and has allowed me to give some of the girls the extra push they need to believe in themselves and not be ashamed of who they are. I have seen a lot of improvements in the attitudes of some of my girls.

  10. I believe this activity should be included in the curriculum! I noticed my girls had a lack of confidence introducing themselves. They slouched and mumbled, this was great practice for them!

  11. I was not here for this activity, yet it sounds great. One of my favorite moments of the whole program was teaching boys to look me in the eyes, introduce themselves, and be proud and confident. It sounds like this activity did the same thing, which is essential and beneficial. Boys often put up a wall of "coolness" and "toughness", but it is through activities like this that they have to drop this act and be proud of themselves and who they are, something that I hope I can help with through teaching in the program.
This activity might have addressed this, but it might be beneficial as well to have students ask family about the meaning of their names, which often helps instill pride in the meaning and beauty of their names.

I teach the boys for CASE. I was actually sort of afraid to do this activity in the beginning. The boys were so hard in the classes I had taught all day long. This activity must stay apart of the curriculum! The boys were complaining at first saying that they did not want to do the activity. I expressed to them the importance of being about to say your name. After I told them how much people appreciate you when you can present who you are, they began to get serious. After a few brave boys started to get into the activity, the boys started to come around. They enjoyed it! As a matter of fact, all of the students who presented completed work to the class after this activity had to say their names before presenting.
