Through the Arts, Ricky Trione, Blind Artist Encourages Students to "Choose their Battles" and "Encourage" Each Other
How do you feel our Character Ed/Art/Self-Esteem session with "Mr. Ricky" went today? What do you suggest for next week?
My kids LOVED painting with Mr. Ricky. They all had so many questions for me that day and the next day. They are excited about next week! I don't really know if I would have any suggestions for next week. I thought it was great and it was nice for them to get out of their usual routine and have a new face!
The kids talk about their paintings all the time and want to know when Mr. Ricky is coming back. I love his story. I think that split of the groups today was much better.
I think the first week with Mr. Ricky went great! I would suggest more time. Today, was even better because the 5th graders had time alone with Mr. Ricky.
My kids were "amazed and mystified" by Mr. Ricky. It has been interesting to see their interest in him encourage them to do things they normally would not have done. One thing that I love about Mr. Ricky is that he has an underlying message that teaches acceptance, and I love the children not only being able to feel it, but also learning how to give it.
This was truly an incredible experience, both for the students and me. More than anything, it gave me a sense of how great fine arts can be for all students. The boys at my table absolutely loved it, and I was amazed at some of the paintings that I saw from the students, of which most were better than mine. I feel that so many schools are so interested in drilling for testing that activities like this are missed, and this is absolutely a travesty. I hope that I can incorporate things like this in my teaching, and also hopefully have Mr. Ricky speak at my school in the fall, as he really does tell a great story of overcoming adversity.
My kids love Mr. Ricky. I love Mr. Ricky. I just wish we had more time with him. It goes by so fast! My kids feel the same way, all they talked about wednesday morning was Mr. Ricky is coming today! It really brings them out of their shell! It's funny that during both times he has been there I didn't hear one of my studnets say "I can't do it" which is something that I hear at least once when an task is placed in front of the kids. To top it off they are all so proud of what they produce! It has made a major impact on them I know! kyndal
My boys were really amazed at Mr. Ricky. Mr. Ricky's story did mean something to them. He made them appreciate art. They put more energy into their own art after Mr. Ricky came.
I feel that the activities with Mr. Ricky were outstanding, inspirational, and motivational! Not only did the students learn from him, but I learned from him as well. This is a great inclusion into the program!
